DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN

The contraceptive sponge has been in use for at least two thousand years!. During the time of Christ, women collected sponges from the sea and soaked them in salts and oils as a spermicide. During the late 1800s, Victorian women were known to pin their sponges to the inside of their petticoats when they went out on the town. Early birth control clinics in the 1900s advised women on how to use a sponge to prevent pregnancies. The Today sponge was released in the United States in 1984. Ten years later, it was removed from the market by the FDA after problems in the manufacturing process were discovered. The sponge is currently unavailable to American women.
